Normal Restaurants, Shipping Container Restaurants, and Food Trucks

Opening a restaurant business comes with a long list of questions which all need resolute answers before taking any actions. What kind of operation do you intend to run? How much is your budget? What can you do with that budget? Who is your target customer?

If the only thing you know is that you want to feed people, you probably face many options and it’s difficult to choose what to do next. Here in this article, we will talk briefly about some of the options you have in front of you if you intend to open a restaurant. We will talk about three types of restaurants; normal ones, shipping container restaurants, and food trucks, and what are the pros and cons of each one of them.

Normal Restaurants, Shipping Container Restaurants, and Food Trucks

Normal Restaurants

The Good

First let’s clarify something. By normal restaurants, we mean a building, large or small, from which you can buy food. This type of restaurant has been operational for centuries, and for good reason. With the exception of shipping container restaurants which are made of many containers and can be huge, none of the options we will talk about in this article are capable of offering this much space for customers and for the staff to work.

More customers mean a bigger business and more income. Bigger kitchen space means more variety of foods and easier, less tiring work for the staff. There is little that is left unknown about normal restaurants and their many strengths, so we will just move on to their weaknesses in comparison to the other options that we will talk about.

The Bad

This type is without a doubt the most expensive type of restaurant to open and operate. Not only you have to consider the down payment and the rent, you also have to consider that every change you make to the structure comes at a larger scale than the other options, and since we are talking about construction work, it will take longer and naturally, be more expensive.

There is also the fact that mobility is completely out of the question, so if you fail to attract enough customers, there aren’t many options left other than closing the entire operation. Some manage to move to another location and get their business going, but that is very rare, considering the fact that they have lost much money over the location and have to spend that amount all over again in the new one.

Just keep in mind that the majority of restaurants close down business within the first year of their operation, and that is because they fail to find a good balance between the money spent opening up and the amount they are earning, and the landscape of their future business isn’t appealing, and changing it up seems either impossible or a risky investment.

Food Trucks

The Good

In short; unlimited mobility. If you have a food truck, you own the most mobile type of restaurant that exists. If the food you offer has enough quality, you are almost guaranteed a relatively decent business. That is because all you have to do is find the right spot to stop the food truck and sell food.

That is easy enough. All you have to do is find a spot with a lot of students or workers, and offer a type of food which is not offered by anyone else in the immediate vicinity. Usually, those type of customers try finding good food close to their work environment or school. You just have to find a spot in which there are many of them and few restaurants nearby. If the

spot you try doesn’t work, then you keep moving until you are satisfied with the business. Food trucks are also viable choices for chasing events. If there is a big event anywhere, there will temporarily be a lot of people in a certain location, and that means a very high food demand. You also pay absolutely no rent at all. The entire operation is very small so the cost of starting it up is also minimal, this means next to no risk in starting up a food truck business.

Normal Restaurants, Shipping Container Restaurants, and Food Trucks

The Bad

This operation is the smallest and most limited of them all. Your business cannot grow bigger than a certain amount. Even if you get other food trucks, you have to come up with new ideas in type of food or find new locations to offer your services, and those suitable locations are usually limited and since it’s quite cheap to get a food truck, the competition is very high.

You also have little space to work with, which means the work will be very difficult for the small staff, so they will be always under a lot of pressure, more so than the work forces of other types of restaurants.

There is also the fact that you normally don’t offer a sitting space, so the only type of service you can offer is a take-out.

Shipping Container Restaurants

The Good

There are two general types of shipping container restaurants; ones which are made of multiple shipping containers and those which are made of just one. In case of the first type, everything is similar to a normal restaurant, the only difference is that instead of normal materials, your big stationary restaurant is made of shipping containers, which means that for opening up the business, you had to construct your own building for it.

Going with the option of shipping containers is far cheaper than normal material, while it is also so much faster to set up that comparing them is pointless. You can set up a big restaurant in a few weeks instead of a number of months or in some cases years. Going with the cheaper option doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice any quality. A shipping container restaurant can come with absolutely all the options of a normal restaurant. Shipping containers are extremely modifiable, so you can have them however you want.

In case of single shipping container restaurants, they are something in between food trucks and normal stationary restaurants and offer the best of both worlds. They are very easy to move about and find the best location to have the best business. They are very cheap to acquire, in many cases even cheaper than food trucks, and they offer much more space than a food truck. You also don’t have to pay rent, and since they are very secure, you don’t need to move them every single day.

Shipping container restaurants have more storage space than food trucks and more general space to work in. There are already many examples of chain shipping container restaurants, which are part of the same business but are set up in many different locations.

Unlike food trucks, most shipping container restaurants do offer a sitting lounge, and they offer something that food trucks can’t: being set up in extreme locations, such as a mountain top or in the middle of the desert.

The Bad

As for stationary restaurants made out of multiple shipping containers, they have more or less the same limitations as normal restaurants, except that they are cheaper to set up and maintain. In case of single shipping container restaurants, they face some of the same problems as food trucks, but not all of them. They are not as small, which means bigger size of business and more work space for the staff. They can also come in the form of chain restaurants which means a larger scale of operation and hence a bigger business in general.
